PGA Awards Announced: ‘Nomadland’ Racks Up Another Major Win On the Way to Oscar

After a win here, it seems highly improbable that anything other than Nomadland can win Best Picture. The last major precursors for Picture are DGA, BAFTA, and SAG. Nomadland’s Chloe Zhao is all but guaranteed a win at the DGA, the film will likely clean up at BAFTA, and while Nomadland is not nominated at SAG a win there for The Trial of the Chicago 7 or Minari (my bet’s on the latter) will most likely not give either film enough steam to win Best Picture. This is looking to be one of the more predictable Best Picture races in recent memory.

The Documentary race is a lot more interesting. My Octopus Teacher has been nominated for all the major precursors that usually link to contention for the Best Documentary Oscar and its win here over Time shows that there is a good chance that the fan-favorite film might win at the Oscars. However, PGA is not as predictive of this award as DGA, ACE, and BAFTA are so keep that in mind.
