PGA Awards 2023: ‘EEAAO’ Wins Another; ‘Navalny’ Cements Itself as Doc Frontrunner

Everything Everywhere All at Once is going to win Best Picture. There are no ifs and or buts about it. PGA is the most important precursor and with EEAAO’s win here and at DGA and Critics Choice, it has all it needs to truly truly cement it as the Best Picture frontrunner. Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio which has now won at PGA, CCA, the Golden Globes, and the Annies will be winning Animated Feature with essentially complete certainty as well.

Navalny winning here at PGA was huge. While consensus frontrunner Fire of Love won DGA, Navalny now has both BAFTA and PGA, a combo that the last two winners in this category had (My Octopus Teacher and Summer of Soul). I’ve had as my winner for a month now because of its strong showing at guild nominations and since the political documentaries that win are like this (ones that are almost completely non-controversial to the general liberal Hollywood population).

Here’s the full list of nominees and winners.

  • PGA 2023 Nominees Announced: Massive Snubs, Four Sequels Nominated

PGA 2023 Nominees Announced: Massive Snubs, Four Sequels Nominated

Now that the PGA has released their nominations, six films have received nods from the CCA, Golden Globes, and the PGA: Everything Everywhere All at Once, The Banshees of Inisherin, The Fabelmans, Tar, Top Gun: Maverick, and Elvis. These films can be confidently said to be locked for a Best Picture nomination. Top Gun: Maverick wasn’t the only blockbuster sequel among the PGA’s picks, “Avatar: The Way of the Water”, “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever”, and “Glass Onion: A Knives Out Story” were also nominated.

Darren Aronofsky’s “The Whale” was also a surprise nominee in this category, giving me more confidence that the industry is a fan of the film and that Brendan Fraser is the frontrunner to win Best Actor.

In the last six years, an average of eight films nominated at PGA ended up getting nominated for Best Picture as well. With this year’s expansion to 10 slots for BP nominees, I think anywhere from 7-9 of the PGA 10 will make Picture at the Oscars. I am leaning towards 7 or 8 at this stage but we shall see.

  • PGA Awards: ‘CODA’ Becomes a Very Possible Best Picture Contender

PGA Awards: ‘CODA’ Becomes a Very Possible Best Picture Contender

CODA now has won both PGA and SAG, a combination that no film since Birdman (2015’s Best Picture winner) has had. Couple that with a likely win at WGA later today and CODA could very possibly have the trifecta of PGA, WGA, and SAG. That would make it seem like the film is now the Best Picture frontrunner but I’m going to stay with The Power of the Dog for now.

Encanto triumphed over The Mitchells vs. the Machines in Best Animated Feature and I don’t think it can be beat at the Oscars on Sunday. Summer of Soul’s win also cemented its place as the frontrunner in the Documentary category.

  • PGA Preview: ‘The Power of the Dog’ Should Continue Rolling and Can ‘Mitchells’ Beat ‘Encanto’?

PGA Preview: ‘The Power of the Dog’ Should Continue Rolling and Can ‘Mitchells’ Beat ‘Encanto’?

The Producers Guild Awards are tomorrow and are the last piece of the puzzle in the Best Picture, Best Animated Feature, and Best Documentary Feature races. Here is a preview of what will most likely be in store and what that means for the Oscars.

    BEST PICTURE

The Power of the Dog has already won at the Golden Globes, the Critics’ Choice Awards, the Directors Guild Awards, and at BAFTA. To win Best Picture, a film needs at least one of PGA, SAG, and WGA. CODA got SAG and The Power of the Dog isn’t eligible for WGA, so in my eyes, it needs PGA for me to be confident about predicting it. If anything other than ‘Dog’ wins here, we have an actual race on our hands, but otherwise, we will almost undoubtedly be seeing Campion’s film take Best Picture on the 27th.

    BEST ANIMATED FEATURE

Encanto has won the Golden Globe while The Mitchells vs. the Machines won both the Critics Choice award and the Annie award. Since Inside Out in 2015, every winner in this category has won both a CCA and a PGA. So if ‘Mitchells’ achieves that feat, I’ll gladly be predicting it as my winner. However, Encanto is easily the animated film with the most love from the general public and that fact alone could propel it to victory here at PGA and at the Oscars. Flee still has a chance but it wasn’t nominated at PGA and as it only has an Annie for best Indie film under its belt, I don’t think its chances are very high. Though I will maintain that if more people saw Flee, it would easily win as it’s both beautifully animated and the most emotionally resonant film of the bunch.

    BEST DOCUMENTARY FEATURE

I had predicted Summer of Soul missing out on a Documentary nomination due to the Doc branch’s infamous snubbing of films composed of mostly archival footage. However, now that Questlove’s film is nominated, and the whole Academy is selecting the winner, Summer of Soul should have an easy path to victory as it’s the doc with the most visibility and acclaim. Flee has a chance, but its lack of a DGA nod is troubling and I think Summer of Soul pretty much has this in the bag with wins at CCA, BAFTA, and ACE. It doesn’t even need to win here at PGA, though it wouldn’t hurt.

  • PGA Nominees Released: ‘Being the Ricardos’ and ‘Tick, Tick…BOOM!’ Round Out the Last Two Slots

PGA Nominees Released: ‘Being the Ricardos’ and ‘Tick, Tick…BOOM!’ Round Out the Last Two Slots

In the last five years, an average of eight films nominated at PGA ended up getting nominated for Best Picture as well. With this year’s expansion to 10 slots for BP nominees, I think either eight or nine of the PGA 10 will et into Picture at the Oscars.

The top eight (The Power of the Dog, Belfast, West Side Story, Dune, Licorice Pizza, Don’t Look Up, CODA, and King Richard) all made it into the PGA lineup and will most likely replicate that success at the Oscars. The question is who will the other two picks be? Well that’s a question for another post.

    Here are the PGA nominees:

  • PGA Awards Announced: ‘Nomadland’ Racks Up Another Major Win On the Way to Oscar

PGA Awards Announced: ‘Nomadland’ Racks Up Another Major Win On the Way to Oscar

After a win here, it seems highly improbable that anything other than Nomadland can win Best Picture. The last major precursors for Picture are DGA, BAFTA, and SAG. Nomadland’s Chloe Zhao is all but guaranteed a win at the DGA, the film will likely clean up at BAFTA, and while Nomadland is not nominated at SAG a win there for The Trial of the Chicago 7 or Minari (my bet’s on the latter) will most likely not give either film enough steam to win Best Picture. This is looking to be one of the more predictable Best Picture races in recent memory.

The Documentary race is a lot more interesting. My Octopus Teacher has been nominated for all the major precursors that usually link to contention for the Best Documentary Oscar and its win here over Time shows that there is a good chance that the fan-favorite film might win at the Oscars. However, PGA is not as predictive of this award as DGA, ACE, and BAFTA are so keep that in mind.

The Most Important Weekend In The Best Picture Race Is Here

Today, The Producers Guild Awards announces its winners for Best Theatrical Motion Picture.

    PGA

Because the Producers Guild of America shares many of its members with the Academy we see a lot of crossover in their Best Picture winners. They also adopted the preferential ballot system the same year the Academy did and have been using it ever since.

Here are their last 10 winners:

    • – indicates Best Picture win

    2019 – Green Book*

2018 – The Shape of Water*

    2017 – La La Land

    2016 – The Big Short

    2015 – Birdman*

    2014 – 12 Years a Slave* and Gravity (TIE)

    2013 – Argo*

    2012 – The Artist*

    2011 – The King’s Speech*

    2010 – The Hurt Locker*

    Onto this year’s nominees:

If presumed frontrunner Once Upon a Time in Hollywood wins this award it will win Best Picture at the Oscar. However, I smell a surprise brewing and I doubt that it will win the PGA. This is for two reasons, the film’s lack of an editing nomination at the Oscars and the Bruce Lee controversy during the fall. I think it might end up like Three Billboards Outside of Ebbing, Missouri and get very close, but not win Best Picture. That film also lost the PGA to The Shape of Water.

So what will win, I think 1917 has the kind of broad support that could bring it to the top and its Golden Globe win and amazing box office came at the perfect time.

Jojo Rabbit (which I loved) and Joker have a few too many people that hate them to get the broad support that this award and Best Picture need. In the years before the preferential ballot these films would probably have better chances at getting the top prize at either of these awards bodies.

Parasite is a strange case. It has the broad support a film needs to win, but as an international film it has that “one-inch tall” barrier to break. Still, there is a lot that separates it from last year’s foreign-language Best Picture frontrunner. Roma. First and most importantly, Parasite is a lot more entertaining than Roma. While they both are expertly-crafted films with emotional impact, Parasite is more involving for the average movie lover. So essentially, if we see Parasite winning this, don’t be surprised.

The Irishman has mostly fizzled and Marriage Story, Ford v Ferrari, Little Women, and Knives Out all have very outside chances to win (but there is always a possibility for anything).

    SAG

Also this weekend is the Screen Actors Guild Awards, which used to be more predictive of Best Picture but still is a good indicator of the preferences of the Academy’s largest branch, the actor’s branch.

The Screen Actors Guild also shares many of its members with the academy, but has made some pretty outside choices since SAG became SAG-AFTRA in March 2012

Here are their winners since 2013:

    • – indicates Best Picture winner

    2019 – Black Panther

2018 – Three Billboards Outside of Ebbing, Missouri

    2017 – Hidden Figures

    2016 – Spotlight*

    2015 – Birdman*

    2014 – American Hustle

    2013 – Argo*

You can see every SAG winner here

I think Once Upon a Time in Hollywood and Parasite both have shots at winning the SAG ensemble. My prediction is Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, but unlike if it wins at PGA, a “Hollywood” win here won’t virtually guarantee a Best Picture win.

What SAG is more important in predicting is the acting categories at the Oscars. My predictions for those categories at SAG are the same as my predictions for those categories at the Oscars: Joaquin Phoenix for Best Actor, Renee Zellweger for Best Actress, Brad Pitt for Best Supporting Actor, and Laura Dern for Best Supporting Actress. If these four win their categories at SAG, they will are virtually locked for the Oscars.
