22 Mar WGA Winners Announced: ‘Promising Young Woman’ triumphs over ‘Trial’
A win here was important for The Trial of the Chicago 7 since I believed that it needed at least this and SAG under its belt to be a top-2 contender for Best Picture. However, it did not prevail and its chances at winning at SAG are growing increasingly dim as Minari’s stock is quickly rising. So, unless Promising Young Woman, The Trial of the Chicago 7 or Minari take PGA from the hands of Nomadland, Zhao’s film will have a relatively painless path to Best Picture.
Borat Subsequent Moviefilm won in Adapted Screenplay but since both Nomadland and The Father, the only two realistic contenders for that award at the Oscars, were ineligible, I think it will end up being inconsequential. If anything, Borat’s surprise win here shows that there is a lot of support in the industry for the film which could propel Maria Bakalova to a win in Best Supporting Actress.
