    Golden Globe Nominations Announcement Aftermath

    Finally, one of the most significant precursors in the Oscar race released its nominations.

    First and foremost, the pool of films that might be nominated has increased to 12 from the 10 that the AFI released last week. Now the list is: Da 5 Bloods, Judas and the Black Messiah, Mank, Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom, Minari, Nomadland, One Night in Miami, Soul, Sound of Metal, The Trial of the Chicago 7, and now The Father and Promising Young Woman. We’ll find out on February 7th (Super Bowl Sunday) if Critics’ Choice adds anything to this list.

    A stat that I want to mention is that no Best Picture winner in at least the last 10 years has won the award without being at least nominated for a Picture award, Best Director, and Best Screenplay at the Golden Globes. This year, four films fit that criteria: Mank, Nomadland, Promising Young Woman, and The Trial of the Chicago 7.

    Stats tell us that these are the four films that can win Best Picture. Another stat, every Best Picture-winning film in at least the last ten years has been chosen as either one of the AFI’s Top 10 or as the recipient of their Special Award. Promising Young Woman is the only film that fails in this criteria.

    Mank wasn’t received too warmly so we’ree back to where we started a race between Nomadland and The Trial of the Chicago 7.

    Final Golden Globes Nominations Predictions

    Nomadland and The Trial of the Chicago 7 are the only ones I am sure about picking in this category. I could see any group of three films from the group of One Night in Miami, Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom, Mank, Promising Young Woman, Da 5 Bloods, and Judas and the Black Messiah filling out those remaining slots. This one is really tricky because this is one of the few years where there are literally no major Best Picture contenders in the Best Comedy or Musical category.

    While Hamilton has the least chance of these five to be nominated here as some HFPA members may not agree that it should be included in this category as it is technically a recording of a musical, the film will likely win this category if nominated. This is one of the very few categories where I am pretty sure that these are the five that will be nominated. Emma. Might be only the one that can upset based solely on the strength of Anya Taylor-Joy being one of this year’s breakout stars.

  • ‘Judas and the Black Messiah’ is my new pick for Best Picture

    ‘Judas and the Black Messiah’ is my new pick for Best Picture

    Judas and the Black Messiah is my new pick for Best Picture. The film premiered at the Sundance Film Festival last night to glowing reviews (its Metascore is currently an 86). What a film needs to be to win in this day and age is timely/relevant and conventionally entertaining. 4 of the 5 last Best Picture-winning films (except for maybe The Shape of Water) could be put in both of those categories.

    Peter Debruge of Variety calls the film “explosive” and “indisputably timely” in his review and those are exactly the kind of words that I was looking for and I truly do believe that this film will win Best Picture.

    Nomadland is the frontrunner for most people and was my frontrunner but I do not think it is a conventionally entertaining movie. It has the most support from the critics, but like ‘Roma’ two years ago, it could falter because the average moviegoer might find it “boring”.

    From the reviews I have seen, ‘Judas’ is the opposite of boring and it is timely so it has everything it needs to win Best Picture. The Trial of the Chicago 7 and Promising Young Woman also have the qualities I mentioned above but Judas and the Black Messiah seems comparatively more relevant considering this past year with the massive racial justice protests we have seen across the country.

    So, with all that said, I’ll probably have Judas and the Black Messiah in the top spot in my predictions this month.

    Today, the American Film Institute released its picks for the 10 best films and television shows of the past year and as this organization’s picks are some of the most predictive when it comes to the Oscar Best Picture field, they are worth an analysis.

    Interesting inclusions this year include Sound of Metal, Soul, Judas and the Black Messiah, Da 5 Bloods, and One Night in Miami as everything else was essentially guaranteed to be included. All the films nominated here definitely receive a boost in their standing in the Best Picture race.

    In past years, AFI has one of the best track records when it comes to predicting the Oscar nomination slate.

    • 2020 – 8 of the 9 Oscar nominees received a nod from the AFI (Missed: Ford v Ferrari)
    • 2019 – 6 of 8 (Missed: Vice and Bohemian Rhapsody)
    • 2018 – 7 of 9 (Missed: Phantom Thread and Darkest Hour)
    • 2017: 7 of 9 (Missed: Lion and Hidden Figures)
    • 2016: 6 of 8 (Missed: The Revenant and Brooklyn)

    (Note: The AFI Top 10 can only include American films but in 2020 and 2019, Parasite and Roma, respectively, won AFI Special Awards)

    In the last five years, the eventual Best Picture winner has always been an AFI pick and there hasn’t been a year where more than two of the eventual Best Picture nominees did not hit AFI before.

    Obviously, we are living in exceptional circumstances and it is important to mention that AFI picks are not usually as far away timewise from the Oscars as they are this year. That said, these are pretty compelling statistics and I would be remiss if I hadn’t mentioned them.

    Now I am going to analyze each film that did not make the AFI cut but received either a Golden Globe, SAG, Critics Choice, BAFTA, or National Board of Review nod on their way to becoming a Best Picture nominee.

    • Ford v Ferrari – Nominated for Best Picture at the Critics Choice Awards and by the National Board of Review
    • Vice – Nominated at both Golden Globes and Critics Choice
    • Bohemian Rhapsody – Nominated at Golden Globes (won as well) and SAG
    • Phantom Thread – Nominated by National Board of Review
    • Darkest Hour – Nominated at BAFTA and at Critics Choice
    • Lion – Nominated at the Golden Globes and Critics Choice
    • Hidden Figures – Nominated at SAG (won as well) and picked by the NBR.
    • The Revenant – Nominated by Golden Globes (won as well), BAFTAs (won as well), and the Critics Choice Awards.
    • Brooklyn – Nominated at the Critics Choice Awards

    What these statistics show me that if a film that gets snubbed by the AFI want to receive a Best Picture nomination, they have to be picked by the Critics Choice Awards and if they don’t do that they have to win at either the Golden Globes, SAG, or BAFTA. Only Phantom Thread breaks this so the National Board of Review picks should be paid attention to as well.

    January Oscar Predictions

    We’re at the stage in the game where we essentially know what films will be considered. In my view, there are 13 films that have a good chance to get a Best Picture nomination, the ten I put in my predictions and News of the World, Soul, and Sound of Metal. 6 of these films (Nomadland, ‘Trial’, Mank, ‘Ma Rainey’, Minari, and ‘One Night’) I think are essentially locked in for a nomination while the rest will probably shuffle around until nomination morning on March 15th.

    I was thinking of leaving out Da 5 Bloods from my nominations this month, but the film has continued to stay relevant in the race due to the enormous attention it has received from the critics’ awards in a variety of categories. It seems this film, even though it was released in June, will be remembered come Oscar nomination morning.

    At this point in the race, I think there are only 3 films that can win Best Picture Nomadland, The Trial of the Chicago 7, and Judas and the Black Messiah. The first two have been widely-seen and are generally well-liked by both the critics and public. However, Judas and the Black Messiah has not been seen by the general public but early word is very good and if this movie makes a big impact with critics then this film will shoot up on this list.

    This is the first time I have Promising Young Woman in the top 10 and I think it will stay there since due to this category’s use of the preferential ballot, films with a passionate following benefit, which is something this film has in spades.

    I’m keeping The Father and News of the World as they are films that will likely appeal to the “old guard” of the Academy but at the same I don’t see as much passion behind them and something like Da 5 Bloods, Soul, or Sound of Metal could easily take up one of their slots.

    Chloe Zhao does not look like she can lose this at this point in the race. Something may change but Zhao is the director of a top 3 Best Picture contender and has won essentially all of the critics’ awards so far for Best Director.

    To me, Zhao, Fincher, and Sorkin are all but assured a nomination with the bottom two slots being more of a question mark.

    Like Zhao in director, there doesn’t seem to be a way that Boseman loses this. His performance has been getting plaudits from everywhere and while he is not far and away the leader in critics’ awards he has won at the ones that are more predictive of success at the Oscars.

    I had trouble leaving Yeun out of the top five and if Mank continues to receive a mostly tepid reception from the public and critics’ groups, Oldman might drop out. Ahmed, Boseman, and Lindo are the actors receiving the most attention from the critics’ groups and while I didn’t have Ahmed in here last month his performance (and his film for that matter) is gaining notices.

    Carey Mulligan is slowly but surely rising up the ranks as her performance continues to get more and more recognition. She and McDormand are getting most of the attention in this category from critics’ groups, but don’t underestimate Davis who would become only the second-ever Black woman to win in this category (Halle Berry won for Monster’s Ball in 2002).

    Zendaya is coming off a surprise Emmy win and her performance in Malcolm and Marie is being praised as one of the best of the year by the critics that have seen the film. That Emmy momentum could propel Zendaya in to the top five but she would likely replace either Kirby or Day.

    Daniel Kaluuya is getting raves from the few reviews of Judas and the Black Messiah that are out there and I don’t really see him not being a nominee. Odom Jr. and Baron Cohen are definitely his Kaluuya’s main competition in this category and either of these actors playing historical figures could win.

    Paul Raci has (by far) won the most critics’ awards in this category and that catapults him into the top five this month. I don’t see him winning because his film is not a frontrunner but it’s definitely a possibility.

    I don’t see anybody outside of my top six listed here getting nominated in this category. However, choosing that one actress that will get left out is difficult. But I’m going to go with Close since her film was widely panned.

    Maria Bakalova and Youn Yuh-Jung have won most of the critics’ awards in this category but they both have things working against them. Bakalova’s performance was in a comedy and as purely comedic performances hardly ever get nominated, Bakalova has to work through that barrier.

    102 Greatest Films of All-Time

    During this once-in-a-lifetime experience, where people are at home, bored out of their minds and sifting through the thousands of movies that are available at their fingertips, I felt that the time was as good as any to unveil my self-compiled “Greatest Films of All-Time”, so people have some choices of good cinema to watch.

    These films are not ranked based on my opinion. I tried to find films (using a formula) that are exalted by both critics and audiences and I came up with this list. There are definitely some specific why-is-that-above-that aspects of this list that I may not agree with, but the movies that I have seen on this list are, in my opinion, amazing and the others are from sources that are usually trustworthy. (I excluded documentaries and shorts from the list)

    “Gone With the Wind”, “Rio Bravo”, “WALL-E”, “The Wizard of Oz”, “To Be Or Not To Be”, “To Kill a Mockingbird”, “High and Low”, and “Heat” are some movies that just missed the cut.

    102. The Searchers (1956)

    ‘The Searchers’ (Warner Bros.)

    Directed by: John Ford

    One of the great John Ford’s finest films, “The Searchers” is a beautiful Western that is full of moral ambiguity and was voted the 4th Greatest Film of the 20th Century by a Village Voice poll. “After a long three-year absence, the battle-scarred Confederate veteran of the American Civil War, Ethan Edwards (John Wayne), turns up on the remote and dusty Texan homestead of his brother, Aaron (Walter Coy). In high hopes of finding peace, instead, the taciturn former soldier will embark on a treacherous five-year odyssey of retribution, when the ruthless Chief Scar’s (Henry Brandon) murderous Comanche raiding party massacre his family, burn the ranch to the ground and abduct his nine-year-old niece, Debbie (Natalie Wood). Driven by hatred of Indians, Ethan and his young companion, Martin Pawley (Jeffrey Hunter), ride through the unforgiving desert to track down their lost Debbie; however, is the woman they lost and the prisoner in Scar’s teepee still the same woman the searchers seek?” (From IMDb).

    101. The Shawshank Redemption (1994)

    ‘The Shawshank Redemption’ (Columbia)

    Directed by: Frank Darabont

    “Get busy living, or get busy dying”. This movie is so iconic and I was surprised this tale of perseverance did not make it higher on this list. The performances are top-notch and this is one of Roger Deakins’ best works of cinematography. “In 1946, a banker named Andy Dufresne (Tim Robbins) is convicted of a double murder, even though he stubbornly proclaims his innocence. He’s sentenced to a life term at the Shawshank State Prison in Maine, where another lifer, Ellis “Red” Redding (Morgan Freeman), picks him as the new recruit most likely to crack under the pressure. The ugly realities of prison life are quickly introduced to Andy: a corrupt warden (Bob Gunton), sadistic guards led by Capt. Byron Hadley (Clancy Brown), and inmates who are little better than animals, willing to use rape or beatings to insure their dominance. But Andy does not crack: he has the hope of the truly innocent, which (together with his smarts) allow him to prevail behind bars.” (From Rotten Tomatoes).

    100. Annie Hall (1977)

    ‘Annie Hall’ (United Artists)

    Directed by: Woody Allen

    Widely acknowledged as Woody Allen’s masterpiece (even if he doesn’t agree), “Annie Hall” is one of the great romantic-comedies and the Best Picture winner is a joy to watch and could bring you some light during this pandemic. “Alvy Singer (Woody Allen), a forty year old twice divorced, neurotic, intellectual Jewish New York stand-up comic, reflects on the demise of his latest relationship, to Annie Hall (Diane Keaton), an insecure, flighty, Midwestern WASP aspiring nightclub singer. Unlike his previous relationships, Alvy believed he may have worked out all the issues in his life through fifteen years of therapy to make this relationship with Annie last, among those issues being not wanting to date any woman that would want to date him, and thus subconsciously pushing those women away. Alvy not only reviews the many ups and many downs of their relationship, but also reviews the many facets of his makeup that led to him starting to date Annie. Those facets include growing up next to Coney Island in Brooklyn, being attracted to the opposite sex for as long as he can remember, and enduring years of Jewish guilt with his constantly arguing parents.” (From IMDb).

    99. Do the Right Thing (1989)

    ‘Do the Right Thing’ (Universal)

    Directed by: Spike Lee

    Spike Lee’s honest, visually-impressive masterpiece, “Do the Right Thing” is an unflinching portrait of race relations in America and is still relevant and timely today. It is essential viewing, never boring, and has an amazing soundtrack. “This film looks at life in the Bedford-Stuyvesant district of Brooklyn on a hot summer Sunday. As he does everyday, Sal Fragione (Danny Aiello) opens the pizza parlor he’s owned for 25 years. The neighborhood has changed considerably in the time he’s been there and is now composed primarily of African-Americans and Hispanics. His son Pino (John Turturro) hates it there and would like nothing better than to relocate the eatery to their own neighborhood…What begins as a simple complaint by one of his customers, Buggin Out (Giancarlo Esposito) – who wonders why he has only pictures of famous Italian-Americans on the wall when most of his customers are black – eventually disintegrates into violence as frustration seemingly brings out the worst in everyone.     98. La Strada (1954)

    ‘La Strada’ (Paramount Films of Italy)

    Directed by: Federico Fellini

    Probably Fellini’s most accesible film, “La Strada” is instantly alluring and Giulietta Masina’s charming and vulnerable performance as naïve Gelsomina is spectacular. “Godfather” composer Nino Rota’s score is achingly beautiful and Anthony Quinn’s performance as the brutish Zampano is probably the best of his career. “Gelsomina (Giulietta Masina) lives a quiet life with her mother and three sisters. However, this sheltered existence is shattered when a travelling showman, Zampano (Anthony Quinn), pays her mother so that Gelsomina will travel with and work for him. She is initially a reluctant participant in his line of work but soon tries to make the most of it, even learning some new skills. However, she has to contend with his brutish, unfeeling behavior.” (From IMDb).

    97. Amadeus (1984)

    ‘Amadeus’ (Orion Pictures)

    Directed by: Milos Forman

    One of the greatest biopics of all time, (even though it definitely isn’t fully historically accurate) “Amadeus” is so, so entertaining to watch and its epic 2 hour and 40 min length just flies by. With superb production design and a stellar, Oscar-winning turn from F. Murray Abraham as Salieri, Mozart’s greatest rival, the film is an exquisite portrait of a genius. “Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (Tom Hulce) is a remarkably talented young Viennese composer who unwittingly finds a fierce rival in the disciplined and determined Antonio Salieri (F. Murray Abraham). Resenting Mozart for both his hedonistic lifestyle and his undeniable talent, the highly religious Salieri is gradually consumed by his jealousy and becomes obsessed with Mozart’s downfall, leading to a devious scheme that has dire consequences for both men.” (From IMDb).

    96. The Thing (1982)

    ‘The Thing’ (Universal)

    Directed by: John Carpenter

    “Halloween” director John Carpenter knows how to develop dread and suspense in his films and The Thing is a masterclass in those techniques. It is terrifying and always keeps you on the edge your seat. “A US research station, Antarctica, early-winter 1982. The base is suddenly buzzed by a helicopter from the nearby Norwegian research station. They are trying to kill a dog that has escaped from their base. After the destruction of the Norwegian chopper the members of the US team fly to the Norwegian base, only to discover them all dead or missing. They do find the remains of a strange creature the Norwegians burned. The Americans take it to their base and deduce that it is an alien life form. After a while it is apparent that the alien can take over and assimilate into other life forms, including humans, and can spread like a virus. This means that anyone at the base could be inhabited by The Thing, and tensions escalate.” (From IMDb).

    95. Jaws (1975)

    ‘Jaws’ (Universal)

    Directed by: Steven Spielberg

    Widely-acknowleged as the first summer blockbuster and Steven Spielberg’s breakout film (“Duel” was a semi-breakout), “Jaws” is always thrilling and its opening scene is one of the most iconic and greatest tone-setting scenes in film history. “When new Sheriff Martin Brody (Roy Scheider) discovers the remains of a shark attack victim, his first inclination is to close the beaches to swimmers. This doesn’t sit well with Mayor Larry Vaughn (Murray Hamilton) and several of the local businessmen. Brody backs down to his regret as that weekend a young boy is killed by the predator. The dead boy’s mother (Lee Fierro) puts out a bounty on the shark and Amity is soon swamped with amateur hunters and fisherman hoping to cash in on the reward. He is besotted with her and the life she promises for him, to the point that, upon her suggestion, he is willing to drown his wife (Janet Gaynor) in order to be with her.     Like previously-mentioned “Pather Panchali”, “The Matrix” also has two sequels (and they’re making another), however unlike Pather Panchali’s successive chapters, those sequels were pretty lackluster. Still, that should not take away from how innovative “The Matrix” was. It was an extremely visually-impressive at the time of its release (and still is), but will transcend time is its philosophical messaging and transfixing entertainment value. “Thomas A.     Hilarious but with touches of melancholy (I’m realizing that description could work for every Chaplin movie), “The Gold Rush” is one of Chaplin’s best works and is part of a quartet of Chaplin masterpieces that include “City Lights”, “Modern Times” and the previously-mentioned “The Great Dictator”. “The Little Tramp (Charlie Chaplin) goes prospecting for gold in the Klondike. Conditions are harsh, there is little in the way of comfort or food and even less it seems in the way of gold. Thanksgiving dinner for himself and Big Jim McKay (Mack Swain) consists of a boiled boot. Once in town, he meets the beautiful Georgia (Georgia Hale) at the Monte Carlo dance hall. He has worked in the same department for 30 years. His life is pretty boring and monotonous, though he once used to have passion and drive. Then one day he discovers that he has stomach cancer and has less than a year to live. After the initial depression he sets about living for the first time in over 20 years. In Los Angeles, California, 2019, Rick Deckard (Harrison Ford) is a “blade runner”, a cop who specializes in terminating replicants.     The ultimate neo-noir, or at least the most famous one, “Chinatown” is driven by an all-time great Robert Towne screenplay, a magnificent Jerry Goldsmith score, and a pair of magnetic performances from Jack Nicholson and Faye Dunaway (‘The Treasure of the Sierra Madre’  director John Huston delivers a great performance as well). “Los Angeles detective Jake Gittes (Jack Nicholson) is hired by a ‘Mrs. Mulwray’ to spy on her husband (Darrell Zwerling). Shortly after Gittes is hired, the real Mrs. Mulwray (Faye Dunaway) appears in his office threatening to sue if he doesn’t drop the case immediately. Probably the most influential film of the last 30 years, Tarantino’s best film still has not lost any of the energy or novelty that thrilled audiences back in 1994. “Jules Winnfield (Samuel L. Jackson) and Vincent Vega (John Travolta) are two hit men who are out to retrieve a suitcase stolen from their employer, mob boss Marsellus Wallace (Ving Rhames).     Probably the quintessential psychological war movie, “Apocalypse Now” is a legendary film with massive and masterful performances from Marlon Brando, Martin Sheen, and Robert Duvall and iconic cinematography from Vittorio Storaro (who won an Oscar for his work here). This film is also an example of how behind-the-scenes factors can profoundly effect a film, and you can take a look at those stories in the documentary “Hearts of Darkness: A Filmmaker’s Apocalypse”. “The worn out and fatigued U.S Army captain Benjamin L. Willard (Martin Sheen) is sent on a harrowing and surreal mission into the deepest parts of the jungle during the height of the Vietnam War, with the objective of eliminating the rogue Walter E. Kurtz (Marlon Brando), a Green Beret officer who has completely lost his sanity. Together with a small squad of soldiers, Willard sets out by boat to travel upriver towards Kurtz’ base.     A movie who’s influence can be seen from “The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly” to “The Mandalorian”, “Seven Samurai” is arguably the most important action movie ever made as directors like George Lucas, Sergio Leone, and Steven Spielberg have all been majorly influenced by Kurosawa, and this film in particular, in their legendary work. “In 16th century Japan, farmers in a small village face the prospect of again losing their crops to a band of roving thieves. Their solution is to go to the nearest city and see if they can hire samurai to protect them. The farmers are poor and can only offer food and lodging but they soon recruit Kambei Shimada (Takashi Shimura) who determines that they will need a total of seven samurai to properly guard the village. Slowly, he recruits other samurai for their task and once complete, move to the village. There they teach the farmers basic self defense and fortify the village itself.” (From IMDb).

    Yes, I know, it is kind of cheating to put these two films at the top spot but I have always felt that they were kind of one film with an essentially uniform level of quality across the two films. Anyway, what can be said that hasn’t already been said about these films? Francis Ford Coppola’s innovative direction keeps the audience’s eyes locked on the screen at all times. The cast is full of some of the greatest actors of all-time and performers like Marlon Brando, Robert De Niro, Al Pacino, Robert Duvall, and Diane Keaton deliver some of the best performances of their careers. And, of course, Nino Rota’s sweeping orchestral score is iconic to this day and perfectly soundtracks the life and times of the Corleone mob family.

  • Late December Oscar Predictions

    Late December Oscar Predictions

    The critics’ awards have just started up and while they likely will not influence the Oscars as much as they have done in the past (because this year’s ceremony is in April and that is pretty far off from the critics’ awards which happen mostly in January), they still provide an indication of what films the critics will be pushing this Oscar season. This year, Nomadland (which was expected) and First Cow (less expected, but still expected) have performed very well at these early critics’ awards. Da 5 Bloods has also benefited greatly from these awards and I feel more confident about having the Spike Lee feature in my Best Picture lineup. Mank, however, has not gotten the success expected for it in these awards and while it definitely will get a Best Picture nominations its chances of winning are sliding slowly.

    Since most of these critics’ awards are only considering movies that came out in the 2020 calendar year, films that will likely release in 2021 like Judas and the Black Messiah are not eligible. However, I think that if ‘Judas’ is as good as I hope it will be and receives at least an 86 Metascore once it releases it has a great shot at winning Best Picture. That’s because, as it is right now, there are no films that feel like true frontrunners. No film so far has hit the timely and conventionally entertaining combination a film needs to have to win Best Picture. I think ‘Judas’ could have that combination but I’m going to stay cautious on it until it releases.

    But, if nothing changes it will be between Nomadland and The Trial of the Chicago 7 as they both have critics’ support (Nomadland much more than ‘Trial’, but still), timeliness or relevance, and accessibility to wide audiences.

    I am going to be talking a lot about the critics’ awards that are happening all around the country throughout the post, however I think it is important to mention that they have a diminished influence on the final outcome due to the Oscars being moved later in the year. So they are less relevant and while they still will likely provide an indication of where the Oscars will go I think it is important to exercise caution when using them to create your predictions. Also, only four significant critics’ bodies have released their winners at the time of this post so there are more than a dozen more to go and therefore the people who have won so far may not be a great indication of who the critics’ bodies are going to align towards when all is said and done.

    Chloe Zhao seems like the clear frontrunner at this point. However, even though Mank has not received as much love as most thought it would, Fincher still has that overdue narrative going as he has never won an Oscar in his storied and prolific career. Still, Zhao has received the most acclaim this year by far so I think she has the best shot at winning this.

    Chadwick Boseman seems like a lock to win this category even though we are four months away from the ceremony. His performance is being lauded throughout the industry as spectacular and nobody else in this category is getting nearly the amount of recognition as he is so I don’t really see something happening here unless something changes drastically on the road to the Oscars.

    I also think Hopkins, Lindo, and Oldman are pretty much cemented for nominations as they all are getting notices from critics (especially Lindo, who has won Best Actor at the New York Film Critics Circle Awards, and Hopkins who has won Best Actor at the Boston Film Critics Circle Awards). At this stage, the fifth spot is, in my mind, between Steven Yeun for Minari and Riz Ahmed for the Sound of Metal. Since Minari is a film that I think will get a Best Picture nomination I think Yeun will get in but do not count out Ahmed as he delivers a powerful turn in Sound of Metal.

    Viola Davis is one of the best actors of her generation and that power is really expressed in Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom where, according to the critics’ consensus, she gives one of her career-best performances. Frances McDormand also has been getting a lot of positive attention for her performance in Nomadland and while I don’t see her winning this I think that she should not be counted out.

    Of the four significant critics’ groups that have released their winners so far, Sidney Flanigan has won two of them. What this shows is that critics are trying to make sure that Academy voters do not forget Never Rarely Sometimes Always and its lead actress. Promising Young Woman’s wins in Best Actress and Best Screenplay at Los Angeles also continue that trend of critics reminding Academy voters of films that were talked about pre-COVID.

    This race is by far the most wide-open of the acting races. I don’t feel as confident about any of these men getting a nomination as I do about the frontrunners in most other categories. I feel like this category is very subject to change, but I do think that if Judas and the Black Messiah ends up as good as I hope it will be and becomes a contender for a Best Picture win, Kaluuya might win this category for his portrayal of Fred Hampton.

    The four critics’ awards have gone to three different people here: Chadwick Boseman for Da 5 Bloods, Paul Raci has won two for Sound of Metal, and Glynn Turman won one today for Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom. Of these three, I think that Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom will be the bigger Best Picture player so I think that Turman will receive his first Oscar nomination for his performance this year. However, don’t be surprised if Boseman becomes a double nominee or if Raci breaks into the top five.

    Even though Mank is falling off a little bit, Amanda Seyfried is staying strong. Her performance has continued to be talked about and while she has not won a critics’ group award yet she was the runner-up at both Boston and Los Angeles which is good for a performer from a more mainstream film like Mank.

    Minari’s Yuh-Jung Youn and Borat Subsequent Moviefilm’s Maria Bakalova have split the critics’ awards so far, but I am hesitant to add Bakalova to the top five due to the Academy’s long-standing bias over comedic acting. However, the quality of her performance became national news due to its victim so she might be in the top five by next month.

    The Trial of the Chicago 7 is an Aaron Sorkin film and as it is also a big Best Picture player I think it is virtually locked for a nomination. Mank also seems like a lock here and the screenplay being from David Fincher’s late father, Jack Fincher, can only help its chances.

    Promising Young Woman and Never Rarely Sometimes Always have both one screenplay award a piece but I think that Promising Young Woman is more likely to get a nomination due to its scathing social commentary.

    While Nomadland isn’t really a “talky” film there are many profound nuggets of wisdom found throughout the screenplay and that could push it through. The Father, Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom, and One Night in Miami are all based on plays so they may be more appealing in this category as voters love the powerful monologues seen throughout theater-based films.

    Even though Wolfwalkers has one most of the critics’ awards, Soul is very critically-acclaimed and is an original Pixar movie so it’s hard to see this going to Wolfwalkers.

    This award often rewards nostalgia like it did last year when Once Upon a Time in Hollywood won here. Mank’s impeccable recreation of 1930’s Hollywood is going to appeal to that nostalgia and the film seems like an early lock in this race.

    I feel like Soul might be the only locked nomination in this category as Soul has been getting love from the critics’ groups (it won at both Los Angeles and Boston Online) and it is rare that an animated film gets recognition in any category from these critics’ groups.

    Diane Warren has received 11 Oscar nominations without a win and with a relatively weak slate in this category this may be her year to finally win the prize as she wrote a song for The Life Ahead.

    Another Round did amazing at the European Film Awards and even though it is a slightly unconventional winner here it is from the respected Thomas Vinterberg who has directed the masterpieces Festen and The Hunt. And even though critics have not quite taken to it at the level they have for past winners, (its Metascore is a 79, and while that is pretty good it is a far cry from the past two winners in this category: last year’s Parasite at 96 and 2018’s Roma at 96 as well) I think it is the frontrunner as of now. Still, I think that it needs a little bit more for it to be in the Best Picture nomination conversation like past winners have been.
