    PGA Awards 2023: ‘EEAAO’ Wins Another; ‘Navalny’ Cements Itself as Doc Frontrunner

    Everything Everywhere All at Once is going to win Best Picture. There are no ifs and or buts about it. PGA is the most important precursor and with EEAAO’s win here and at DGA and Critics Choice, it has all it needs to truly truly cement it as the Best Picture frontrunner. Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio which has now won at PGA, CCA, the Golden Globes, and the Annies will be winning Animated Feature with essentially complete certainty as well.

    Navalny winning here at PGA was huge. While consensus frontrunner Fire of Love won DGA, Navalny now has both BAFTA and PGA, a combo that the last two winners in this category had (My Octopus Teacher and Summer of Soul). I’ve had as my winner for a month now because of its strong showing at guild nominations and since the political documentaries that win are like this (ones that are almost completely non-controversial to the general liberal Hollywood population).

  • 2023 Oscar Nominations: ‘Everything Everywhere’ and ‘All Quiet’ Lead the Pack

    2023 Oscar Nominations: ‘Everything Everywhere’ and ‘All Quiet’ Lead the Pack

    Everything Everywhere All at Once getting in for Costume Design and Score (should’ve gone with my gut on this), and Original Song, all categories the film was not favored to get nominated in, is a clear indication of the overwhelming Academy-wide support it has. It led the pack with 11 nominations.

    All Quiet on the Western Front announced itself as a tech giant, taking nine nominations. The war film followed up its massive BAFTA haul with reduced, but still impressive, results with the Academy.

    They did what they did last year with Belfast’s Caitrona Balfe and Judi Dench. While Balfe did better with the precursor nominations, the Academy went with the veteran Dench come nominations morning. This time around, The Fabelmans’ Paul Dano performed better at the precursors, but his costar Judd Hirsch got in with the Academy.

    Descendent becomes the first Higher Ground Oscar-eligible documentary film to miss Best Documentary. Making way for A House Made of Splinters to receive a nomination.

    Ruben Ostlund got in for Triangle of Sadness and his film was selected for Picture over The Whale (which was snubbed in Adapted Screenplay as well). Brendan Fraser is still the front runner for Actor, but his path now seems slightly more difficult.

    In the acting categories, Brian Tyree Henry (YES!), Paul Mescal (YES!), and Andrea Riseborough surprised with nominations. Riseborough’s inclusion is especially notable as she had a strong but incredibly last-minute campaign that was ran by her Hollywood friends. Her inclusion (along with Michelle Williams) led to both Danielle Deadwyler and Viola Davis being snubbed for Till and The Woman King respectively.

    The Oscars will be televised on March 12th, live from the Dolby Theater on ABC.

    PGA 2023 Nominees Announced: Massive Snubs, Four Sequels Nominated

    Now that the PGA has released their nominations, six films have received nods from the CCA, Golden Globes, and the PGA: Everything Everywhere All at Once, The Banshees of Inisherin, The Fabelmans, Tar, Top Gun: Maverick, and Elvis. These films can be confidently said to be locked for a Best Picture nomination. Top Gun: Maverick wasn’t the only blockbuster sequel among the PGA’s picks, “Avatar: The Way of the Water”, “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever”, and “Glass Onion: A Knives Out Story” were also nominated.

    Darren Aronofsky’s “The Whale” was also a surprise nominee in this category, giving me more confidence that the industry is a fan of the film and that Brendan Fraser is the frontrunner to win Best Actor.

    In the last six years, an average of eight films nominated at PGA ended up getting nominated for Best Picture as well. With this year’s expansion to 10 slots for BP nominees, I think anywhere from 7-9 of the PGA 10 will make Picture at the Oscars. I am leaning towards 7 or 8 at this stage but we shall see.

    Golden Globes Nominations 2023: ‘Banshees’ Leads With 8, ‘Everything Everywhere’ and ‘Fabelmans’ Cement Themselves as the Frontrunners

    The Golden Globes released their slate of nominees this morning, shedding further light on what to expect this awards season. One thing I always mention when the Golden Globe noms are released is the stat that in the last 10 years (in all years except the most recent), the eventual Best Picture winner was nominated for a Best Film, Director, and Screenplay award at the Globes before going on to win Oscar’s biggest prize.

    This year, Everything Everywhere All at Once, The Fabelmans, and Banshees of Inisherin received that nomination trifecta, cementing those films as the three biggest players of the season. The former pair will likely be the two biggest frontrunners and I predict EEAAO will end up winning it all in the end.

    Another stat I want to mention is that in the last ten years, at least four of the five nominees in Best Film – Drama went on to earn Best Picture nominations later on in their respective years. That means that at most one of Avatar 2, Elvis, The Fabelmans, Tar, and Top Gun: Maverick won’t make the slate. I think that film is most likely to be Avatar 2 (my current BP slate being EEAAO, The Fabelmans, ‘Banshees’, Tar, Women Talking, Babylon, Top Gun: Maverick, Elvis, She Said). However, there is also a pretty good chance that all the films nominated here will make it in, hopefully the CCA nominations coming out on Wednesday will provide another piece of the puzzle.

    PGA Nominees Released: ‘Being the Ricardos’ and ‘Tick, Tick…BOOM!’ Round Out the Last Two Slots

    In the last five years, an average of eight films nominated at PGA ended up getting nominated for Best Picture as well. With this year’s expansion to 10 slots for BP nominees, I think either eight or nine of the PGA 10 will et into Picture at the Oscars.

    The top eight (The Power of the Dog, Belfast, West Side Story, Dune, Licorice Pizza, Don’t Look Up, CODA, and King Richard) all made it into the PGA lineup and will most likely replicate that success at the Oscars. The question is who will the other two picks be? Well that’s a question for another post.

    DGA Nominees Released: PTA, Branagh, Campion, Spielberg, and Villeneuve All Make It In

    The last time the eventual Best Picture winner missed DGA was in 1990 when Driving Miss Daisy’s Bruce Beresford missed directing nods at both the DGA and the Oscars yet his film still ended up winning the top prize. So it seems highly unlikely that any film outside of this group will triumph in the end. Of course, ‘The Power of the Dog’, with ‘Belfast’ following closely behind, are still the two frontrunners.

    With these five getting nominations, someone like Adam McKay’s chances of getting nominated for Best Director are now essentially non-existent. Usually, four out of the five DGA nominees translate to Oscar nominations and that usually happens when they see a DGA-nominated film as more of a screenwriting achievement than a directorial achievement. I think Branagh is the best bet to fall, as a result of this trend, and someone like Ryusuke Hamaguchi or Joel Coen could take his or PTA’s place.

    SAG Nominations: Kristen Stewart Misses and ‘House of Gucci’ Overperforms

    The SAG nods were released a few hours ago and with them in our possession only the BAFTA noms are left in terms of major acting precursors. As usual, there were some surprises. Biggest of all being Kristen Stewart, who was marked as the frontrunner for a Best Actress nomination by many (including me) missed a SAG nomination. In her place was Jennifer Hudson who many thought, for all intents and purpose, was out of the race.

    House of Gucci overperformed and other than its expected inclusion for Lady Gaga in Best Actress it was also nominated for Best Cast Ensemble and Best Supporting Actor for Jared Leto (nominated by SAG for the second time in the row as he was picked last year for The Little Things). There were other surprises in Supporting Actor as Bradley Cooper (Licorice Pizza) and Ben Affleck (The Tender Bar) were nominated, Cooper receiving his first major precursor nod. Also, both Jamie Dornan and Ciaran Hinds of Belfast missed as well.

    The BAFTAs announced their longlists today with West Side Story and Don’t Look Up leading with 15 appearances each. The Power of the Dog and Belfast were close seconds with 14 nods each. I’ll dive into the ramifications of these longlists in my January predictions so here are the BAFTA picks.

    15 films go through to the Round Two of voting, and five will be nominated. This is the only category voted for by all film voting members in all voting rounds. 217 films were submitted for consideration.

    Golden Globes 2022: ‘West Side Story’ Wins 3, ‘The Power of the Dog’ Wins Best Drama

    Though the Golden Globes likely won’t have the weight they usually do as they weren’t televised and are being willfully ignored by the majority of the industry, they are still a major Oscar precursor. The Power of the Dog and West Side Story won 3 Globes a piece and though I’ve always had The Power of the Dog as my predicted Best Picture winner, the Globes are truly the first major precursor to release its picks so far and their selection of The Power of the Dog over Belfast (when I thought the award was surely going the latter) was a surprise that gave me more confidence about having the film as my #1 pick.
