Critics Choice Nominations: ‘Barbie’, ‘Oppenheimer’, ‘Poor Things’ Lead; ‘Anatomy of a Fall’ is Snubbed

This year’s Critics Choice Awards saw a glaring lack of nomination for non-English language features outside of the “Foreign Language” category. Both Anatomy of a Fall and LAFCA Best Film winner The Zone of Interest were snubbed from Best Picture. ‘Anatomy”s stars Sandra Huller and Milo Machado Graner received nods but the film missed in Original Screenplay and Editing.

The Color Purple rebounded from its Golden Globe miss with a Best Picture nomination here, something it needed to even have a chance at a Best Picture nomination. Saltburn also made it into Best Picture and also received nods in Cinematography and Production Design.

With the massive snubs for across the board for both major international contenders Anatomy of a Fall and The Zone of Interest, I doubt that they will mean much for the Oscar race. The Academy has diverged greatly from the Critics Chouce Awards in their acknowledgement of international films in recent years, so this should not be too concerning. However, with the inclusion of The Color Purple in the Best Picture slate, there are now eleven films that I think have a realistic chance at an Oscar Best Picture nod: Oppenheimer, Killers of the Flower Moon, Poor Things, Barbie, The Holdovers, Past Lives, American Fiction, Maestro, Anatomy of a Fall, The Color Purple, and The Zone of Interest. Either The Color Purple or The Zone of Interest will miss, time will tell which one.

  • Critics Choice Awards 2023: ‘EEAAO’ Triumphs, Angela Bassett Wins Once Again

Critics Choice Awards 2023: ‘EEAAO’ Triumphs, Angela Bassett Wins Once Again

With a trifecta sweep (Picture, Director, and Screenplay) at the Critics Choice Awards, Everything Everywhere All at Once has bounced back after underperforming at the Golden Globes. The CCA have predicted the Oscar Best Director winner in all of the last six years and to me, it makes sense if The Banshees of Inisherin wins Best Original Screenplay and EEAAO wins Director. I really don’t see ‘Banshees’ getting shut out (unless it misses out on a Director nod) and that’s the category where it is most competitive. Speaking of ‘Banshees’, Colin Farrell, as the leader at the critics’ awards, should’ve probably won here yet was beaten out by Brendan Fraser, who further cements his argument as the Best Actor frontrunner.

The winners in the other acting categories were expected, except Angela Bassett continues to surprise, winning here after her triumph at the Golden Globes. Could she sweep? While I do think she will take SAG and BAFTA will go with Condon, she has a likely shot at winning the Oscar now, what would be the first nomination and win for a Marvel movie performance. Now Condon (or whoever wins BAFTA) could Mark Rylance their way to Oscar glory on just a BAFTA win, but things will become more clear once the British Academy releases their nominations on the 19th.

Critics Choice Nominations: ‘Everything Everywhere All at Once’ Leads With 14, ‘She Said’ Misses in All but Screenplay

With the Critics Choice Awards coming through with their nominations this morning, we now have the penultimate piece of the puzzle (other than the Producers Guild Awards which will release on January 12th) when it comes to the Best Picture nomination slate. At this point, ‘Everything Everywhere All at Once’, ‘The Fabelmans’, ‘The Banshees of Inisherin’, ‘Tar’, ‘Babylon’, ‘Women Talking’, ‘Top Gun: Maverick’, and ‘Elvis’ are all essentially locked for nominations. ‘Glass Onion’, ‘Avatar’, and ‘RRR’ were also given nods, while other films on the cusp like ‘She Said, ‘The Woman King’, ‘Till’, ‘The Whale’ and ‘Triangle of Sadness’ missed the cut. In my eyes, ‘She Said’, a film that I had predicted for a Best Picture nod up to this point, now needs a PGA nod to stay in the slate. At this point, my picks for which films will fill the remaining two slots in Best Picture are ‘Avatar: The Way of the Water’ and ‘RRR’ (though Aftersun also has a pretty good chance of taking this tenth slot).

    Here are Critics Choice’s nominees:

    BEST PICTURE

    “Avatar: The Way of Water”

Colin Farrell – “The Banshees of Inisherin”

  • Critics Choice Awards: Campion, Smith, and DeBose Complete Their Sweeps

Critics Choice Awards: Campion, Smith, and DeBose Complete Their Sweeps

Jane Campion, Will Smith, and Ariana DeBose have swept all four major precursors in their respective categories and are essentially locked for wins come Oscar night. The Power of the Dog has now won the Golden Globe, the DGA, the BAFTA, and the CCA for Best Film and will likely win the PGA as well on Saturday. It’s already indisputably the frontrunner for the win, but if TPOTD wins the PGA, I really won’t be able to see any other film earning the top prize.

In other news, Jessica Chastain and Troy Kotsur won in their respective categories and I think Kotsur will most probably win as a result of him earning 3 (SAG, BAFTA, CCA) of the major precursor awards. I think Kodi Smit-McPhee needed a win here for me to continue to have him as my frontrunner in Supporting Actor but since Kotsur ended up winning, I think the CODA star is the favorite.

I was expecting three different actresses to win GG, SAG, and CCA, yet Jessica Chastain has now won the latter two. With these wins, she is automatically catapulted to frontrunner status, though she is easily the most vulnerable of any of the other acting category frontrunners.

Here are the Critics Choice results:

  • Evaluating the Race After Critics Choice Nominations

Evaluating the Race After Critics Choice Nominations

The Broadcast Film Critics Association finally released their nominations and with them in mind I will try to take a deeper look into what probably will be nominated in Picture

    Picture

Now that News of the World has finally received a nomination, there are now 13 films in total that can get a Best Picture nomination (Da 5 Bloods, The Father, Judas and the Black Messiah, Mank, Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom, Minari, News of the World, Nomadland, One Night in Miami, Promising Young Woman, Soul, Sound of Metal, The Trial of the Chicago 7) and unless PGA picks something crazy in early March, these will be the top 13 contenders.

    Let’s break them down:

Da 5 Bloods – CCA, SAG, AFI

    The Father – GG (Drama)

Judas and the Black Messiah – AFI

Mank – CCA, GG (Drama), AFI

Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom – CCA, SAG, AFI

Minari – CCA, GG (Foreign), SAG, AFI

News of the World – CCA

Nomadland – CCA, GG (Drama), AFI

One Night in Miami – CCA, SAG, AFI

Promising Young Woman – CCA, GG (Drama)

    Soul – AFI

Sound of Metal – CCA, AFI

The Trial of the Chicago 7 – CCA, GG (Drama), SAG, AFI

Based on this, The Trial of the Chicago 7 is the most locked for a Best Picture nomination.

If Beale Street Could Talk, Mary Poppins Returns, The Big Sick, The Florida Project, Sully, Carol, Star Wars: The Force Awakens are the only films in the last five years that have missed a Best Picture nomination after getting nods at both CCA and AFI. What do these films have in common?

Well, all of them except The Big Sick did not end up getting nominated at the Producers Guild Awards. And The Big Sick did not get picked by the Oscars in the end because of their storied bias against comedies.

So essentially, if any one of Da 5 Bloods, Mank, Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom, Minari, Nomadland, One Night in Miami, Sound of Metal, and The Trial of the Chicago 7 get snubbed by the PGA, their Best Picture chances are slightly in jeopardy. I personally think that Sound of Metal will be the one to drop and the final Best Picture slate will be the remaining seven plus Promising Young Woman.

Also, if Judas and the Black Messiah gets a mention from the PGA it’ll be added to slate as well.
