BAFTA Nominations 2024: ‘Oppenheimer’ Leads With 13; ‘KOTFM’ and ‘Barbie’ Falter in Major Categories

Both Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer and Yorgos Lanthimos’ Poor Things performed well at this year’s BAFTA nominations receiving 13 and 11 nominations respectively. Both Killers of the Flower Moon and Barbie missed in major categories. The Scorsese film missed in Director, Lead Actress, and Lead Actor. Lead Actress is especially concerning for Lily Gladstone’s chances at the Oscars. After losing to Emma Stone at the Critics Choice Awards on Sunday, Gladstone needs a SAG win to take the Oscar. Barbie missed in Best Film, Best Director, and many of the below-the-line categories. However, there’s also a point to be made that Killers of the Flower Moon and Barbie have aspects to them that would appeal to American audiences in comparison to British audiences. Killers of the Flower Moon is very specifically dealing with American colonialism and Barbie dolls don’t have the same level of popularity in the UK as they do in the United States.

Anatomy of a Fall, The Zone of Interest, and All of Us Strangers found success across the board spelling good prospects for their chances with the Academy.

  • BAFTA 2023: ‘All Quiet’ Surprises With 7, Including Best Film

BAFTA 2023: ‘All Quiet’ Surprises With 7, Including Best Film

All Quiet on the Western Front won 7 awards at this year’s BAFTA Awards including Best Film, Director, Adapted Screenplay, and Cinematography. How many of these will the film win at the Oscars? at this point it has Best International Film in the bag and is a possible winner for Cinematography, but I doubt it expands past that.

Oscar frontrunner Everything Everywhere All at Once was held to just Best Editing while its main challenger The Banshees of Inisherin came out with four, Best British Film, Original Screenplay, Supporting Actress, and a surprising Supporting Actor win for Barry Keoghan. With these wins, and Austin Butler and Cate Blanchett’s wins in Best Actor and Best Actress respectively, none of the acting races have a clear frontrunner, making this. Though if Blanchett ends up winning at SAG that will change. Since Eddie Redmayne in 2015, every BAFTA winner in Best Actor has also won at the Oscars and if Butler wins at SAG he will have the same three major precursors (GG, BAFTA, and SAG) that fellow biopic winners Redmayne and Malek did in 2015 and 2019 respectively.

My pick for Best Documentary, Navalny won at BAFTA, making me even more confident that it will triumph over All the Beauty and the Bloodshed and Fire of Love with the Academy as well. It’s exactly the kind of political film they like, not too extreme, highly watchable, and relevant but not at the top of the current news cycle.

  • BAFTA Nominations 2023: ‘All Quiet’ Shocks With 14; ‘Fabelmans’ Limited to Screenplay

BAFTA Nominations 2023: ‘All Quiet’ Shocks With 14; ‘Fabelmans’ Limited to Screenplay

All Quiet on the Western Front’s massive haul of fourteen nominations is the biggest story of the morning and makes predicting what the Netflix film and what the international film will be this year in Picture so much easier. It’s so interesting how All Quiet on the Western Front had basically no major precursor nods, it missed out at CCA, PGA, DGA, AFI, and NBR (it did win Adapted Screenplay here though). So even with this haul, I don’t think it is a top 5 Best Picture contender at the Oscars by any means, but I think it would be foolish of me not to have in my Best Picture nomination predictions and topping by Best International Feature predictions.

Unlike last year where 2 of the 6 nominees in the performance categories were chosen by a membership-wide vote, this year 3 of the 6 were chosen by BAFTA members and the other 3 were chosen by juries. As a result, I think they deserve more closer analysis, in terms of Oscar nomination predictions, than I think they did in the last couple years.

Another shock of the morning was Spielberg’s The Fabelmans coming out with exactly one nomination, in Original Screenplay. It was snubbed in Cinematography, Production Design, and Score, all technical categories it is projected to be nominated in at the Oscars. As a result of this, I foresee an Editing snub for the film and this gives even more evidence that Everything Everywhere All at Once is the clear frontrunner.

  • BAFTA Awards: The Power of the Dog, Will Smith, and Others Win Big

BAFTA Awards: The Power of the Dog, Will Smith, and Others Win Big

The recipients of this year’s BAFTAs were announced today. The most surprising moment, though inconsequential for the Oscar race, was veteran British actress Joanna Scanlan’s win for After Love. Other than that Will Smith, Troy Kotsur, and Ariana DeBose picked up more gold on their paths to the Oscars.

The Power of the Dog won both Picture and Director, further cementing its place as the BP frontrunner. However, it did also lose Adapted Screenplay to CODA which will also most likely win at WGA. This means that The Power of the Dog will have a max of a win at CCA under its belt, while CODA will most likely have BAFTA and WGA. I could see CODA winning Adapted Screenplay, especially since Campion is essentially guaranteed in Director and voters may want to spread the wealth.

  • BAFTA Nominations Released: ‘Dune’ Leads With 11, Best Actress Becomes Even More Wide-Open

BAFTA Nominations Released: ‘Dune’ Leads With 11, Best Actress Becomes Even More Wide-Open

The BAFTA nominations were released this morning and provided the final piece of the puzzle for my Oscar nomination predictions, though what that puzzle ends up depicting isn’t clear to me. Dune performed well and was the nominations leader with 11 nods (though director Denis Villeneuve wasn’t one of them).

In the acting categories, two people were picked by the whole academy while the other four nominees were selected by a jury. The eventual nominees in these categories were, with this knowledge, relatively unsurprising, with the exception of Best Actress. Nicole Kidman, Olivia Colman, Kristen Stewart, and Jessica Chastain were all snubbed and Lady Gaga was the only actress in my personal top 5 Best Actress predictions that made it in. She was likely the top pick in the academy vote, but who was second place? My guess is Licorice Pizza’s Alana Haim and if that is the case, her chances of receiving a nomination have dramatically increased.

  • BAFTA Day 2: ‘Nomadland’ takes Best Film, Hopkins and McDormand Get First Major Wins

BAFTA Day 2: ‘Nomadland’ takes Best Film, Hopkins and McDormand Get First Major Wins

Nomadland and Chloe Zhao continued their onslaught of the major precursors with BAFTA wins and this time they brought Frances McDormand along with them. The Best Actress winners have been split, with four different women taking the four major acting award precursors (Andra Day – Golden Globe, Carey Mulligan – Critics Choice, Viola Davis – SAG, Frances McDormand – BAFTA). This will undoubtedly be seen as one of the most unpredictable Best Actress races in a very long time. However, I still don’t see McDormand winning the Oscar and, to me, it’s between Day, Mulligan, and Davis, with the lattermost actress being my pick to win it as of right now.

Anthony Hopkins also surprised with a win over Chadwick Boseman. While this win was a surprise, I don’t think it really hurts Boseman’s chances of winning the Oscar as Hopkins’ win was likely the result of it being at the British BAFTAs.

Due to that win, Daniel Kaluuya is the only actor left this season that has swept all the major precursors and he is essentially guaranteed (and entirely deserves) a win for Best Supporting Actor.

The juries obviously changed things up this year in the directing and acting categories but I believe that all of the same winners would have prevailed in all of the categories even without the juries, except for Best Actress, which I think would have gone to Carey Mulligan as her performance in the Best British Film winner Promising Young Woman (it also won Best Original Screenplay) would have had a lot of support. Speaking of that screenplay win, with its win here, Promising Young Woman is far and away the favorite to win Best Original Screenplay unless The Trial of the Chicago 7 somehow finds itself winning Best Picture, in which case it will win Original Screenplay as well.

    Anyway, here are today’s winners:
